• I have been guilty on more than one occasion for ignoring the timeless rules of Wren and Martin. I still commit blunders when it comes to the usage of commas, semi-colons and dashes. Now I hope this link helps me to perfect my usage of punctuation marks, at least. I have always liked to write sentences that follow proper grammar rules. It helps me to treat my own writing seriously. Especially the stuff I write on my blog. I am sure quite a few of you might have faced similar situations. So here’s the link again. Hope it helps. Ladies and Gentlemen…

…this is only a minor absence from my blog. I am as alive as the world would let me be. I should be back in a few days. There is really no need for panic.

So relax. A little more wait should do no harm. Read other blogs.

Thank you (and sorry for the wait),
- The Piker.

PS: Things that should keep you busy in the meantime.
1. Counting sheep in your sleep.
2. Reading all emails in your spam folder and replying to them.
3. Reading the wikipedia entry on: Himesh Reshammiya.

Sultan: Super Star turns Super Hero

¶ Published Thursday, June 28th at 8:38 am ∞ In Rajnikanth, Desi Dabba, Movies, EntertainmentNo Comments »

While all the media hype focuses on Sivaji, the Thalaivar has made sure that he will not go off the loop completely once the buzz over Sivaji dies down. This is surprising, given there is usually a big lull and uncertainty about the next Rajni movie until it, in fact, gets announced. People speculate if he is actually going to act in another movie and such. This time when we went to watch Sivaji, the Sultan trailer greeted us prior to the opening credits. Something that is sure to ensure a good buzz, once the excitement over Shankar’s latest offering dies down.

It was both surprising as well as refreshing to see an actor feature in an animated movie. Well, we know Shahrukh Khan, did some voice overs in the Hindi dubbing of The Incredibles, but this one is an entirely novel concept - where the animated character is modeled on the actor. One that gives yet another endorsement of his demi-God status.

Tag Attack: Eight Random Facts

¶ Published Monday, June 25th at 7:20 am ∞ In General Rubbish11 Comments »

Patrix has tagged me and so like, a lot of these blog related formalities go, I should oblige. Moreover, this tag was pretty harmless without my need to reveal anything embarrassing, hence my decision to quickly get done with it. So before I go ahead with it, here are the rules:

1. Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
2. People who are tagged, write a blog post about their own 8 random things, and post these rules.
3. At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people and include their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment and tell them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.
4. If you fail to do this within eight hours, you will not reach Third Series or attain your most precious goals for at least two more lifetimes.

So clearly scared out of my skins, after reading Rule #4, I decide to post my eight random facts. Here goes… *gulp*

Some Shameless Gloating

The past week has sure been busy and I had a lot of things going on. Academically that is. Although that didn’t stop me from blogging, on the other blog.

For those not aware, I had started a football fan blog dedicated to Manchester United: Red Rants. Of course, thanks to Ahmed from Soccerlens for the promotion of the site on his blog the site, although just over a month old now boasts 82 posts. And yes, it crossed the 10,000 views mark yesterday (by the way, that was 10,000 for the day)!

On Sivaji and Rajni

¶ Published Monday, June 18th at 6:43 pm ∞ In Rajnikanth, Movies9 Comments »

I was planning to write a review on Sivaji - The Boss for some time now. (For those living under a rock all this while, that is Rajnikanth’s latest movie to hit the screens). But enough has already been written about it, so I will not make this a pure review per se. I’ll pepper my thoughts on the movie with my thoughts on the Rajni phenomenon in general.

So we went to Houston to watch this movie and also paid $16 for a ticket! So what elicits this kind of a response from a person who has, till now, generally been content avoiding both Hindi and Tamil movies, ever since he came stateside? A comic book lover will look forward to the next issue of Spiderman/Batman/Superman and so on, whatever be the case. Star Wars fans of the seventies may have complained about how bad The Phantom Menace was in comparison to the original trilogy, but they watch the movie anyway.

Aishwarya Rai on Heroes?

¶ Published Friday, June 15th at 5:47 am ∞ In Entertainment, T.V.2 Comments »

Well I don’t know how to react to this. The thought of her featuring in a show that I love does not sound totally bad to me, but she will play Shanti Suresh (Mohinder’s sister) who apparently was dead according to the first season. No doubt, the writers will concoct something out of the blue and get her alive again. Heck, rumours abound that even Sylar might be back. (Honestly, he was among the best baddies on television last season) Just hope the story, with all its sub-arcs does not get too convoluted for the writers themselves to manage.

Don’t get carried away by the Aishwarya rumours though. Heroes-tv took down the article after thinking that the sources might have been ’suspicious’. Oh well! Case of the ‘Aishwarya as the next bond girl’ story again, ainnit? We’ll wait and see.

I wanted to post a season review of Heroes on DesiDabba - where it’s been a while since I posted anything - but I don’t want to spoil the fun for the desi audience. Yes, it is in fact taking ages for Heroes to get over, back in India!

Honestly, the finale of Heroes left me with a weird taste in the mouth. It felt like sucking on those tangy layers of lollipop only to reach the center and discover a piece of bitter gourd nicely nestled there instead of the chewing gum you were hoping to get.

Enough of inane analogies. Aishwarya Rai on Heroes? Go chew on it.

Among the few regular commenters on this blog, Amit/Etherdust was a senior of mine in my undergrad days and a good friend. He has a blog that mostly talks about stuff related to music. Of course his posts are more known for their start-and-you-finish levels of brevity but that’s not the point anyway. He claims that writing is not his thing, although I strongly disagree. I remember his noir-like short story series on his older blog which was very good. Anyway his blog, i.e., the Music/mp3 genre of blogs is a rare breed at least in the desi blogosphere so I thought I could bring this to the attention of the few that actually read this.

Actually Amit dabbles in music composition, and he’s just posted a new song in his blog. I thought I might help him get more listeners. (This was voluntary on my part, mind you, and I bet he’d be in for a surprise with this post) Of course, just before you head off to listen, something you might want to know.

Most of his compositions are in the industrial/electronic rock sub-genre and his music is generally dark in mood and theme. This song is no different. So if you love experimental music and artists like Nine Inch Nails, Prodigy, Celldweller and so on, you might like his tunes. He is also involved in CCMixter which is basicallya movement for the creative commons remixing and sharing of music. It is like blogging (or rather open source coding) where you re-use existing tunes for non-commercial purposes. He also believes the Open Source philosophy in software should extend to music in a big way.

Anyway, that’s it from me over to him.

Of Lakshmi Mittal and Football Clubs

¶ Published Tuesday, June 12th at 11:49 pm ∞ In Soccer, General Rubbish, SportsNo Comments »

I am expecting this piece of news to make it big in the Indian media. Lakshmi Mittal (yeah that steel guy) is apparently linked with a possible takeover of English Premier League football club Birmingham. I remember the frenzy when Baichung Bhutia moved to third division side Bury.

For those who don’t follow football that much and have heard only names like Chelsea and Manchester United, Chelsea were a mediocre club before a Russian billionaire bought the club. Now they are a world power in football. He was worth around 9 billion pounds. Mittal is worth double at around 19.25 billion!

Although Mittal’s decision to buy the club would be from a purely personal and a business standpoint, expect the media to start talking about how that is going to improve Indian football. Or better, “Does that mean football following is on the rise in India?” Or rather the usual, “Will we qualify for the next World Cup?”

What fun, no? I can’t wait for it. (Please TOI, NDTV, Aaj Tak and co. Don’t disappoint me!)
